INTRODUCING GREENPOWER About Greenpower
Greenpower Education Trust inspires young people aged 9-25 to excel in science, technology, engineering and Maths, through a unique challenge - To design, build, and race an electric car.
IET Formula Goblin age 9 to 11
The Goblin Kit Car is a great introduction to STEM for primary school children, they get hands on assembling the car and compete in slaloms, sprints, and drag races at events.
IET Formula 24 age 11 to 16
In F24, teams have more freedom to design and build their Kit Cars or scratch builds, and students develop their STEM skills. Regional heats feature two 90 minute races requiring 3 drivers, with an International Final at the end of the season. 8
IET Formula 24+ age 16-25
F24+ is a great project as a gateway to a STEM career, and for furthering employability skills. Races are an hour long, and the category is ran as a championship with each teams 2 best results in heats, and their result in the final counting.

GREENPOWER’S 20th ANNIVERSARY Throughout 2019 Greenpower will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Having started from a single race at Goodwood in 1999, it has grown to a truly international programme with teams in every continent, and numerous licenses operating across the globe. Gathering of Goblins 21st July 2019 The historic Goodwood Motor Circuit is once again our venue of choice for the end of year International Gathering of Goblins. This is an opportunity to give children who have been involved in the design and building of their IET Formula Goblin kit cars a chance to proudly display their achievements in a wonderful setting.
is the timed Sprint around the circuit’s Chicane. The afternoon also gives one lucky child from each team the chance to race an entire lap of the 2.4 mile circuit – “The lap of Champions”. Proceeding the event will be a grand prize giving.
Greenpower International Finals 17th October 2019 The 2019 International Finals will be held exactly 20 years on from when it all started on the 17th October 1999. To add to the excitement it will be held at the home of British motorsport, Silverstone.
This will award prizes for the top three cars in each of the four events plus additional awards, which celebrate the multiple aspects of the project.

This year we are celebrating 10 years of Greenpower. In July 2009 we set off on a journey to Newquay with a level of optimism. This was short lived and that is when our true journey started. For the first few years it was certainly a time of many downs but in recently years we have certainly found a way forward with multi 2nd and 3rd positons and finally achieving our first ever 1st position last year. This year sees the arrival of two new cars to our team, in the shape of Sirocco M3-19 and Zephyr. Both are going to be identical in terms of shape, but underneath we are going to have two very different stories.

The chassis of both cars are plywood, the bodies from fibreglass and all of the components in the car have been weighed and studied to see if they are suitable for what we are trying to achieve. This was a big decision for us having had Mistral and Sirocco for many years, but we realised one thing – they were never going to improve and if we wanted to progress then this was our opportunity. We currently have 20 pupils in our team, ranging from 11 to 18 years. The is great opportunity for them all to get involved, and roles within the team range from driver to engineer and from team administration to photographer. This new period in our history has only been possible due to the generous sponsorship of a local company that sees a real worth in the Greenpower project.

CASE STUDY
The Technology Academy
The Technology Academy is designed to help young people to develop careerreadiness skills in engineering, vehicle development and technical skills. The aim of the Technology Academy is to provide students with a unique experience, that will inspire, support and help them to pursue a career in Engineering. The Technology Academy consists of students at both the Bridgwater College Academy and Bridgwater & Taunton College. As part of the Academy students will build electric cars from kits (Green Power Racing) to race-ready vehicles, culminating in a race event on the 23rd June 2019. Alongside this activity, there will be industry-related visits and team
building activities. The Academy meets on a Wednesday evening from 5pm – 7pm in the Energy Skills Centre, Bridgwater Campus.
Build is progressing well and we are using our on-site composite lab to make body panels.
The Academy began with some icebreaking activities to allow students to get to know one another. The students split into teams to create structures out of marshmallows and spaghetti (the materials of the future no doubt!) The following week to get into the racing spirit needed for the 23rd June, the students travelled up to Bristol and went Go-Karting. It was a great opportunity to engage in some friendly rivalry, and the competition was tough! Back in the Advanced Engineering Centre on the Bridgwater Campus, students had a session on composites which will form the bodywork for their race cars. The PPE (personal protective equipment) also arrived, which means that each student now has their own Technology Academy overalls for each week in the workshop! 21
CASE STUDY Renishaw Engineering Ellie Edbrooke
To celebrate ‘International Women in Engineering Day’ we asked Renishaw graduate, Greenpower team member and driver, Ellie Edbrooke, to talk about her journey into engineering and how her work with Greenpower has really benefited her. “I always had an interest in science and maths at school, particularly physics and biology and wanted to continue studying both subjects. In 2010, my school became involved with the Greenpower project, I signed up and really enjoyed it and have been involved with them ever since. I used my experiences and the knowledge I’d gained through Greenpower to apply for an Arkwright scholarship (for aspiring engineers) which I was awarded in 2012. Greenpower gave me the idea that engineering could be a career for me, 22
however I was also interested in a career in medicine and explored this by undertaking several work experience placements whilst I was still at school. With my interest in biology and engineering, I initially made the decision to study Medical Engineering at University, but unfortunately, I didn’t get the required A-level grades and opted for Medical Physics instead. I was still keen to pursue engineering but this slight change in my plans did knock my confidence and I did wonder if it was still an option for me. I then spent my summer working in a university research lab and another working in the medical physics department of my local hospital and decided to complete a year in industry. I attended the 2015 Greenpower international final and visited the Renishaw display tent.
finishing my degree. In my role, I’ve been working on implants for delivering drugs to the brain; this is to try and treat degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s. My department also works on technology that enables surgeons to implant electrodes that send electrical signals through the brain to minimise the tremors caused by Parkinson’s. Whilst this doesn’t cure the disease, it does help to reduce some of the patients’ symptoms and give them better quality of life and its great to be able to work on something that can really make a difference to someone’s life.
Now that I’m back at Renishaw I’m involved with the Greenpower team, driving and working on one of their cars; I also volunteered to help out with the Goblins events held at Renishaw sites in Gloucestershire and South Wales. CASE STUDY Bromsgrove School The Chicken
Greenpower for Bromsgrove School started 7 years ago with the same Kitcar chassis that you see today. Back then, the car was all yellow and made its debut at Mallory Park. For the staff and students it was one of the greatest memories we have because it showed us how good our students were as a team and allowed us to see the massive potential that Greenpower had on our budding designers and engineers. We ranked 344th at this time and wanted to make a Kitcar the fastest that we could. As it evolved over the coming years, we experimented with lots of options and after three seasons of coming off track on the back of trailer, we decided it was time for a revamp and that is when we started to look at weight saving, aerodynamics and simplicity. 24
This for us was a major turning point and after a student rebuild (which happens at the end of EVERY season), we had a winning formula and started to obtain a smattering of trophies along the way. At the end of the seasons that followed, we looked at marginal gains and advancing whatever we could. We now have the aim to make the Kitcar a top ten competitor and not just an entry level race car you use before ‘moving up’ to a hand built special. Team Chicken prides themselves on teamwork and pushing as hard as we can to achieve their goals. We have many team friendships from all over the world as well as interesting engineering links with some very interesting sponsors including Gorilla, Classic Team Lotus, McLaren, BAL Aluminium, 4QD and Trumeter to name but a few. We are a proud team and hope to continue making progress on the team as well as building that long awaited hand built special, The Egg. Only then will we
be able to settle an age-old question, which came first…?
